Temporary Closure of Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORT ALBERNI, B.C. – April 2, 2026. The City of Port Alberni wishes to advise residents that Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre is closed until further notice.

Early in the morning on Thursday, April 2, 2026, a water pipe connected to the whirlpool burst. The incident caused localized flooding in the chlorine room, resulting in significant electrical damage to the facility’s chlorine monitoring and sensor systems.

The leak has been contained, and the damaged pipe has been repaired. However, damage to the main control panel requires specialized replacement parts, which are currently being sourced from an off-site supplier.

As a result:

  • The facility will be closed for the full day on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
  • The City anticipates the facility will remain closed until at least Friday, April 10, 2026.

During this closure period, all swim lessons, public swims, and aquatic programs are cancelled. Staff will contact program registrants directly regarding scheduled activities affected by the closure.

“Safety is our top priority, and while we know this closure is disappointing for residents and families who rely on the facility, it is important that we complete these repairs properly before reopening the pool,” said Louizandre Dauphin, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “Our staff are working closely with suppliers and technical specialists to restore service as quickly as possible, and we appreciate the community’s patience and understanding.”

City staff are working diligently to complete repairs and restore services as quickly and safely as possible. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

The City of Port Alberni thanks residents for their patience and understanding as these essential repairs are completed to ensure a safe environment for all facility users.
