“this is one of Vancouver Island’s best community museums” – Lonely Planet
Located in the heart of Port Alberni, the Alberni Valley Museum, reflects the richly diverse past of the area, with a large collection of artefacts linked to First Nations culture, local and industrial history, and folk art. The Alberni Valley Museum uses a unique Visible Storage system to make the entire collection available to the visitor at all times — along with the information, in easy to use catalogue books. The Museum presents an exciting and varied program of temporary exhibits each year, plus we offer challenging hands-on school programs and a range of public programs. There is something for everyone to discover, or rediscover, at this impressive local museum.
You can visit us virtually as well! Click on the front door below to “enter” the Museum and enjoy our virtual tour!
COVID Protocols in Place
At this time, in the main galleries, masks are not required (but are appreciated). Social distancing is still in effect.
We have removed the visitor limit, but are aware of how many people are in the Museum – please ask at the Museum Front Desk if you’d like to know how many people are in the galleries. Groups (10 or more people) must book in advance. Please call us at 250-720-2863 to book a gallery time, arrange a group visit, or if you require any further information.

The Alberni Valley Museum has created some fantastic videos, showcasing museum artefacts, exhibits, and the stories behind them. Each video features an accompanying craft to make at home! Please visit playinpa.ca/online-resources/ to view these videos and check out the crafting ideas!
